Purpose

What Gets You Excited

The two most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why.
-Mark Twain

Many (most?) people like to believe that we humans are here for a reason. That there has to be some grand design for humanity. That unlike every other species past and present we are here to accomplish something and continue on forever. Not so. Instead, we are fortunate. We are just another of the many wonderful gifts of nature. We are here solely by chance. Humanity's purpose is the same as all other living things...to survive and propagate. That's it. As individuals, however, we need a purpose.

Nature provided us with intelligence and opposable thumbs. Along with that, the drive to accomplish something. Each of us needs a purpose. To really thrive, and for good mental health, we need more than just something to do. That's the big reason why we have progressed so much as a species. Most of us are very good at coming up with things to do. It's why we want so many things, especially large ticket items like houses and cars. There is always maintenance and repairs with those kinds of things. Having stuff to do will get you through your days but it probably won't be very fulfilling.

In order to feel happy or content you need to be working towards a goal or trying to make a dream come true. It doesn't have to be much and it doesn't have to be complex. Following a passion may help you discover it. It will give your life meaning and again it doesn't have to be much. It will probably involve helping others. Mental health experts have found that those people whose purpose furthers the human condition in some way, however small, feel most fulfilled. For instance, your purpose may be something as simple as making yourself available in your community. Be part of a movement for change. Be a critic. Help feed people or take care of animals. If you can make a living at it, so much the better.

Do not despair if you don't yet have a purpose. Keep giving it some thought. It is vital. Keep working at it, no matter your age. Give yourself less to do at home. Get out there. The dishes can wait.
